Elisha McGuckin

  • Midland Junction Arts Centre 276 Great Eastern Highway Midland, WA, 6056 Australia (map)

Nostalgia plays a key role in Elisha’s decision-making process when choosing subjects, from the discontinued candy in her Fantale collection, to cassettes and corded landlines. Her subjects are inspired by not only the connections she shares with them, but by the stories that others share with her about them.

“I am happy to take on any subject – I just paint it as I see it sitting before me.”

In art and in life, Elisha prefers not to home in on a particular style. Inspired by an eclectic mix of artists and the expressive nature of both impressionists and expressionists, Elisha has created her own “mish mash,” instinctive style. As the granddaughter of a sign writer and daughter of a technical drawer, Elisha is fascinated with lettering, mastering smooth brushstrokes, and the ability to capture light: how it hits an object, reflects, and dances across coloured surfaces.

Having qualified and worked as a florist early on, Elisha moved into high end fashion retail which gave her an extensive understanding of colour and design. After attending the Fremantle Art Centre for several years, in 2016 Elisha decided it was time to start making steps towards pursing a career as an artist.

When asked about her creative routine, Elisha noted the importance of entering a meditative state, a place of belonging, when applying paint to any surface.

“There’s always music playing to reflect my mood… it is rarely quiet – unless life is extremely busy. That’s when the studio is for meditation and calm brushstrokes.”

Elisha works simultaneously on the beginning, middle and end of paintings, starting preparation for up to five pieces at once, whilst working the details on others.

“I like to keep my body active, so I can’t focus on the details of one piece for too long.”

Elisha works five days a week at a minimum creating art. As a mother, she often finds herself working around her family life, in her studio before and after school drop offs, and early on weekends.

When asked about what she hopes people might take away from viewing her artwork, Elisha responded simply: “Happiness.”

She hopes that her artwork can bring a spark of joy (and even a giggle) to a viewer’s day. Even when times are tough, Elisha wants everyone to carry a smile in their pocket.
