MJAC life drawing sessions are untutored, with a model provided each week and facilitated by Carolyn Francis. Newcomers welcome!

MJAC provides a model, easels and boards. Tea and coffee provided. Bring your own drawing materials and paper.

Purchase a 5 session workshop pass and collect your card when you attend your first life drawing session to be punched off each week you attend. Workshop passes are valid for 6 months. These sessions are casual and bookings week to week are not required. 

Want to try before you buy? You can purchase a single session pass for $20 directly from the facilitator. Simply turn up at the session to pay and give it a go!

Oil Painting with Harrison See

Over 6 weeks Harrison will guide you through the process of creating and reworking a series of ‘painted studies’ on board. Each week you will use oils to interpret and express different subject matter; including landscapes, figures and abstract elements. Using a variety of techniques, Harrison will discuss and demonstrate the importance of mark-making, colour, composition and generating emphasis within a work. Towards the end of this series, you will then have the opportunity to apply what you have learned to a final larger painting. This workshop is focused on experimenting with painting approaches and will offer something to both beginners and experienced painters.

Venture out into the gardens surrounding the Arts Centre as Fiona leads a three hour observational colour mixing class. Get to know the medium of acrylic paint and the core colours required to mix and colour match greens of the Australian landscape. Suitable for beginners and artists looking to extend their knowledge. Botanical Resin: Petal Dress Illustration with Elle-Rose Dunn

Come and join Botanical artist, Elle-Rose Dunn for this one-off fashion illustration workshop. Elle-Rose will share with you her love of using botanicals as a medium to create resin masterpieces. Students will create artworks using leaves, petals, seeds and transparent paper whilst learning the principals of working with resin and silicon moulds. The silicon mould is yours to take home and reuse, following your new found passion for botanical resin. This course is ideal for beginners, or those with little to no resin art experience.

What’s included:

  • High quality pressed flowers, petals, foraged foliage and leaves.

  • Reusable Silicon Mould

  • Resin pouring equipment; resin, stirring sticks, beakers, gloves, cleaning equipment.

Acrylic Landscapes with Alastair Taylor

Complete a small landscape painting with local artist Alastair Taylor. Bring along your own reference image and Alastair will show you how to capture the scene in acrylic paint. This one-day workshop will cover colour, composition, brushwork and Alastair’s wet palette method with acrylics. A selection of primed boards and paint will be supplied.

Participants are invited to exhibit their creations in the Made Here By Hand community exhibition in November.

Clay Birdhouses with Lee Woodcock

Local ceramicist Lee Woodcock will be showing us how to hand-build our very own clay birdhouse. With four walls, a roof and a little perch to sit on, this cosy home can be hung from a tree in your backyard. We’ll be using leaves and flowers from the garden to imprint and colourful clay slips to decorate. All materials and firing included.

Painting Wildlife with Jae Criddle

Thursday’s Art Club invites you to get to know some of the animals on our State’s Threatened Species List in this painting workshop with artist and Illustrator Jae Criddle. Jae will show you how to draw and paint a range of interesting animals such as Blue Whales, Bilbies, Quokkas, Hairy Marron, White-bellied Frogs and Black-footed Tree-rats. Deborah will invite children and community members to contribute to a community canvas by adding to the overall design of the artwork. Join Danjoo - Interwoven artist Linda James, a Bardi woman from the Dampier Peninsula, North of Broome. Learn about Linda’s Aboriginal culture through her artwork and her stories about fishing and living off the sea. Paint shells and sea creatures on postcard sized paper employing Linda’s fine brush technique. Discover how to prepare the background, create texture, apply a stencil and then add detail using a very fine brush.
