MJAC life drawing sessions are untutored, with a model provided each week and facilitated by Carolyn Francis. Newcomers welcome!

MJAC provides a model, easels and boards. Tea and coffee provided. Bring your own drawing materials and paper.

Purchase a 5 session workshop pass and collect your card when you attend your first life drawing session to be punched off each week you attend. Workshop passes are valid for 6 months. These sessions are casual and bookings week to week are not required. 

Want to try before you buy? You can purchase a single session pass for $20 directly from the facilitator. Simply turn up at the session to pay and give it a go!

Acrylic Landscapes with Alastair Taylor

Complete a small landscape painting with local artist Alastair Taylor. Bring along your own reference image and Alastair will show you how to capture the scene in acrylic paint. This one-day workshop will cover colour, composition, brushwork and Alastair’s wet palette method with acrylics. A selection of primed boards and paint will be supplied.

Participants are invited to exhibit their creations in the Made Here By Hand community exhibition in November.

Learn the foundations of oil painting in this four week course with Harrison See. Harrison will guide you through a step by step process of building oil paintings from photo references. Each week you will start a new composition, working methodically to complete a painted study of an image of your choice. This course will discuss and demonstrate colour theory, composition and building up a painting from thick to thin in one session. This workshop is focused on the foundations of oil painting theory and will offer something to both beginners and experienced painters.

Create a happy home for your pot plant this school holidays with Emma Vinkovic from ERV Ceramics. Emma will demonstrate how to build a sturdy planter which can then be decorated with a quirky face. Once your pot is fired, plant some seeds and watch a head of hair grow!

Join MJAC Artist in Residence Tami Esancy for an open studio and drop-in painting session. Tami’s new body of work Isensa creatively responds to her personal narrative through the use of portraiture, ceramics and the re-use of materials. Tami often recycles found acrylic paintings and photo canvases to make her work and invites you to do the same during her open studio sessions.

You are welcome to bring in a painting you’ve found and work with Tami to layer a new story inspired by your own personal narrative. Painting materials supplied.

Over 6 weeks Harrison will guide you through the process of creating and reworking a series of ‘painted studies’ on board. Each week you will use oils to interpret and express different subject matter; including landscapes, figures and abstract elements. Using a variety of techniques, Harrison will discuss and demonstrate the importance of mark-making, colour, composition and generating emphasis within a work. Towards the end of this series, you will then have the opportunity to apply what you have learned to a final larger painting. This workshop is focused on experimenting with painting approaches and will offer something to both beginners and experienced painters.

Clay Birdhouses with Lee Woodcock

Local ceramicist Lee Woodcock will be showing us how to hand-build our very own clay birdhouse. With four walls, a roof and a little perch to sit on, this cosy home can be hung from a tree in your backyard. We’ll be using leaves and flowers from the garden to imprint and colourful clay slips to decorate. All materials and firing included.

Thursday’s Art Club invites you to get to know some of the animals on our State’s Threatened Species List in this painting workshop with artist and Illustrator Jae Criddle. Join Danjoo - Interwoven artist Linda James, a Bardi woman from the Dampier Peninsula, North of Broome. Learn about Linda’s Aboriginal culture through her artwork and her stories about fishing and living off the sea. Paint shells and sea creatures on postcard sized paper employing Linda’s fine brush technique. Discover how to prepare the background, create texture, apply a stencil and then add detail using a very fine brush.
