SHEREE DOHNT

During her residency, Sheree Dohnt investigates and reflects on women’s experiences through the medium of watercolour portraiture. From the anonymous glimpse into the imagined life of a woman in their place of work, to a closely observed and personal portrayal of a friend or family member, what links all these subjects is an investigation of an experience which is specifically female.

CALL OUT

The artist has recently released a callout for participants in this project and is looking for more women from the City of Swan who would allow her to paint them while undertaking any form of ‘work’. It can be at your workplace (with permission), your home, and can include the unpaid acts of labour, whether it be cleaning, caring for family members and pets, cooking, shopping and errands … all forms of labour undertaken by women is considered 'work'. Sheree would require permission to take photos and draw sketches of you, while you go about your day as normal. The voyeuristic approach to her process is an intentional and integral part of the process. Unposed, everyday moments are what the artist is looking to document.

No occupation is off limits (unless it’s illegal). All work by women is worthy for inclusion. So far, Mothers, Teachers, Nurses, Support Workers, Commercial Painters, Mechanics, Childcare Workers, Farmers, and other artists have stepped forward to be painted.

If you are interested in being part of this artist’s residency as a subject, please contact Midland Junction Arts Centre at info@midlandjunctionartscentre.com.au or drop in to see Sheree in residence to discuss.
