Alongside the exhibition, the CoLab Space turns into a hub of textile joy when twelve stitched & bound artists work in residence and open their arts practice to visitors. The residency is divided into blocks to allow visitors to return and visit different artists, watch them work up close and learn a few techniques along the way.

PARTICIPATING ARTISTS

Janice Blight, Julie Devereaux, Margery Goodall, Janine Judge, Jocelyne Leith, Virginia O’Keeffee, Linda Penny, Tiiu Stojanovic, Linda Stokes, Louise Wells, Anne Williams and Mo Woltersdorf.

Fri 1 – Sun 10 May | Linda Stokes and Mo Woltersdorf

During their residency, Linda and Mo welcome visitors to drop into the CoLab Space to view their artworks, technique demonstrations including using an embellishing machine, free motion machine embroidery (drawing with the sewing machine), mixed media & bookmaking, while working on our own projects. There will also be a hand stitching table where visitors can stitch along or try some basic hand stitching for beginners.

Sun 10 - Sun 17 May | Tiiu Stojanovic and Margery Goodall

Tiiu will be developing pieces in ‘Confetti work’ during her residency, an applique technique using many small confetti-sized pieces of fabric, while Margery will work on her ‘quilts’ made of waste materials. They invite visitors to participate in ‘have-a-go experiences’ using innovate cutting and alternative materials to create a small take-away block that can be used as small artworks or made into cards.

Sun 17 - Sun 24 May | Linda Penny and Virginia O’Keeffee

Linda and Virginia will be working on botanical printing in addition to developing their own projects. Linda will also be holding two botanical printing workshops during the week and conducting a community project. The community project will involve stitching into a 5-inch square of botanically printed fabric. The finished squares will be stitched into a wall hanging for donation to a local aged-care facility. Members of the facility will have the opportunity to embroider squares too.

Sun 24 – Sun 31 May | Janice Blight and Jocelyne Leath

Janice will be doing embroidery and slow stitching on wool felt. She has a ‘GO Big Accuquilt’ cutting machine, people can bring their own fabric and use the machine to cut some shapes then learn some stitches to get them started.

Jocelyne will be working in a range of techniques including thread painting, 3D works, fabric painting, hand embroidery, machine embroidery and leather work.

Sun 31 May – Sun 14 Jun | Janine Judge

During her residency, Janine will develop new textile works using her signature fabric collage with thread-painted details, informed by her recent participation in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. The work will focus on translating lived experiences at sea into textile form.

Sun 14 Jun – Sun 28 Jun | Julie Devereux, Louise Wells and Anne Williams

Communicating Through Stitch

Julie, Louise and Anne have a long-term collaboration and respect for each other’s art practices. In this residency they continue to share their love of stitching, handmade books and the use of paper in textile artwork.

Julie will continue delving into her family history and stories, recording and reimagining them in artistic ways with cloth, paper and stitch.

Louise will be exploring and experimenting with new ideas using paper and stitch.

Anne will continue her exploration of the book form to express ideas of what it means to be human, through drawing, stitch and text.

The residency space will be a hub for visitors to stop, slow down, reflect and share as they sit and stitch alongside the artists and chat over a cuppa. Visitors will be encouraged to make a 'page' (or more) of a folded book. A variety of simple paper and fabric books will be on show and materials provided. All levels of experience are welcome.
