SULTANA SHAMSHI
A 15 year retrospective of jewellery and sculptural forms translating identity, history and culture into Western Australian materials while exploring a personal response to injustices around the world.
Revisiting the Mughal Gardens is a retrospective of works by artist-jeweller Sultana Shamshi about identity, history, culture and the impact language and names have on these issues.
Shamshi traces her cultural roots as a starting point, her works directly inspired by the Mughal Era, depicting stylized gardens, flowers, trees and landscapes from her childhood which influence most of her work.
Wearable jewellery and larger sculptural forms combine her heritage and Indian background with her awe of the WA landscape, translating Indian tropes and jewellery design to Western Australian materials as a way of creating a dialogue of larger world issues to prompt change.
