WHAT ON EARTH
The history of artists reinterpreting and rendering images of flora is long and deep. Mundaring Arts Centre Inc.’s fourth ‘Icon Project’, What On Earth featured a series of exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations and events exploring Australian flora at Mundaring Arts Centre, Midland Junction Arts Centre and other locations across Perth as part of this cross-community project.
What On Earth events and exhibitions celebrating the botanical world were presented at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Midland Junction Arts Centre, Mundaring Arts Centre, Flux Gallery, Boya Community Centre, Mundaring District Museum and Kings Park Festival.

CLAIRE GILLAM
Botanic Philharmonia exhibits Claire Gillam’s Plant Band (2017) and Maestro (2019) together for the first time. This fantastical musical collaboration of native flora, specifically designed robotic instruments and processing synthesizers explores the universe of plant based creative performance and generative music making.

Celebrating the act of sharing food, Tableware presents a selection of handcrafted ceramics and textiles made for the dinner table complimented by a feast of native flora. Styled as a pop up shop; a banquet of platters, plates, bowls, beakers and napery showcase the work of makers from around the country.

Celebrating the fertile landscape of the Swan Valley, Lush Valley invites visitors to discover the floral bounty of the eastern region through a selection of works from the City of Swan’s Art Collection. These works, by renowned artists including Gladys Kemarre, Jude Taylor, Rosemary Collard & Chen Hongguang will be exhibited alongside the work of primary school children from the City of Swan who have participated in the 2019 Swan Environmental Art Project.

There are more than 12,000 different types of wildflowers listed in the flora catalogue for Western Australia, over 60% of which are found nowhere else in the world. Wildflower State presents a selection of over 30 invited Western Australian artists who have created works on paper in praise of the state’s unique flora.
mjac ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Sophie G Nixon is a early career artist, emerging curator and recent Honours (Fine Art) graduate living and working on Boorloo Boodja (Perth, Western Australia). Sophie works primarily with textiles and occasionally plants to create gentle sculptures and installations. Currently, she is interested in worn and damaged textiles, searching for unconventional modes of mending and repair.

Bush Bounty explores the many ways people, past and present, encountered West Australian flora. From food and medicine, to decoration on clothing and domestic items, this exhibition celebrates how the State’s extraordinary botanical diversity has been utilised in the everyday and commonplace.

Curated by Sandra Murray, these five female artists are connected by personal investigations of nature in their art practices, ranging from the minutiae of the landscape to the natural environment and the sky above. An underlying sensibility and sensitivity weaves through this intricate array of artworks: Lorraine Biggs (painting, works on paper), Claire Bushby (textiles, works on paper), Penny Coss (painting, wall drawing), Kate Campbell-Pope (textiles, sculpture), Kati Thamo (textiles, original prints). This is the first time that the artists have all exhibited together.

Philippa Nikulinsky AM is a Perth-based, internationally recognised botanical and wildlife artist. Nikulinsky Naturally is a survey of her work from the 1970s to the present which provides a perspective on the unique qualities of her practice - focusing on the evolution of her working methodology and exploring the ways in which she continues to interrogate the botanical riches of the Western Australian landscape.
