Come and be part of a Maloya open rehearsal during Muriel’s residency at MJAC. Maloya is the traditional music and dance of Réunion Island, with powerful drumming, call-and-response singing, and earthy, grounded dance.
You’ll get to see how the music and movement come together, and if you feel like it, you can join in—sing, dance, or just clap along. It’s a relaxed and welcoming space to experience this vibrant culture up close.
Muriel Hillion Toulcanon is a multidisciplinary artist, performer, and cultural leader based in Perth. She is the founder of Salama, Australia’s only Maloya ensemble, sharing Réunion Island’s traditional music, dance, and storytelling with communities nationally and internationally.
