Printmaking Sampler with Phoebe Todd-Parrish

Explore the possibilities of printmaking in this six week beginner’s course with print-artist Phoebe Todd-Parrish. Each week will introduce a different printmaking technique such as Etching, Linocut, Woodcut and Screenprinting. In addition to learning the proper technique for preparing plates, registration, editioning, and how to set and operate a printing press, students will have the opportunity to experiment and create their own unique series of fine-art prints.

Printing equipment, inks, paper and carving tools included in the cost of the workshop. Be sure to wear closed in shoes, an apron and messy clothes.

Happy Planters with Emma Vinkovic

Create a happy home for your pot plant this school holidays with Emma Vinkovic from ERV Ceramics. Emma will demonstrate how to build a sturdy planter which can then be decorated with a quirky face. Once your pot is fired, plant some seeds and watch a head of hair grow!

Design, carve and print lino onto linen in this 2-part workshop with Phoebe Todd-Parrish. Phoebe will guide you through the process of designing your own fabric pattern, with tips and tricks on how to tessellate or space your chosen motifs. Participants can choose between a set of tea towels or cushion covers to work with in this workshop. Lino, cutting tools, ink and one set of linen is included in the cost of this workshop. Be sure to bring along some images or ideas for inspiration as well as any plain linen you would like to recycle. 

Participants are invited to exhibit their creations in the Made Here By Hand community exhibition in November.

Letterpress & Bookbinding with Ann Ong and Phoebe Todd-Parrish

Typeset, print and stitch your own series of notebooks in this collaborative letterpress and bookbinding workshop with Ann Ong and Phoebe Todd-Parrish. 

Part 1 at Bright Press (formerly Whiteman Park Print Shop) will introduce the basics of letterpress, where participants will learn to hand-typeset book covers and pages for a collaborative book project.

In part 2 of the workshop at MJAC, learn three different methods of book binding to assemble your notebooks: Japanese stab stitching, pamphlet stitch, and concertina binding. Students will create their very notebooks with personalised covers and also create a collaborative concertina-bound album of the quotes printed by the class in part 1. 

Participants need only to bring along a meaningful/motivational quote or one-liner to print into the workshop’s collaborative book. Finished books may be exhibited in the Made Here By Hand community exhibition in November.

Clay Birdhouses with Lee Woodcock

Local ceramicist Lee Woodcock will be showing us how to hand-build our very own clay birdhouse. With four walls, a roof and a little perch to sit on, this cosy home can be hung from a tree in your backyard. We’ll be using leaves and flowers from the garden to imprint and colourful clay slips to decorate. All materials and firing included.

Painting Wildlife with Jae Criddle

Thursday’s Art Club invites you to get to know some of the animals on our State’s Threatened Species List in this painting workshop with artist and Illustrator Jae Criddle. Jae will show you how to draw and paint a range of interesting animals such as Blue Whales, Bilbies, Quokkas, Hairy Marron, White-bellied Frogs and Black-footed Tree-rats. Paint, pencils, and cartridge paper will be provided.

Learn and combine three timeless printmaking techniques including Linocut, Monoprint and Rolled Wax to create a layered, unique state print. Suitable for beginners as well as more experienced practitioners hoping supplement their print skills. Introduction to Papermaking & Letterpress with Ingrid Mulder and Ann Ong

Discover the rich history of Japanese paper making and Letterpress printing in this two part workshop. 

Workshop 1 at the Midland Junction Arts Centre will be an introduction to paper making using two different styles of Japanese sheet forming: Tamezuki and Nagashizuki. The class will cover moulds, deckles, recycling paper, sheet forming, hand beating, pressing, drying and decorative effects. Having studied and worked at the Washi No Sato Paper making factory in Japan for over 12 years, Ingrid has a wealth of paper making expertise to impart on new students. Bring coloured silk, threads, natural fibres and pressed flowers to use as inclusions.

Workshop 2 at the historic Whiteman Park Print Shop will introduce the basics of Letterpress, covering the basics of hand typesetting to produce your own print using handmade paper from Workshop 1. This historic method of relief printing dates back to the 1400’s and was used to print newspaper, books and other media until the advent of offset printing. In this class students will work to print a simple text-based project, such as a short quote/ one-liner, poem, or greeting card. Bring a short quote/ one-liner/ something simple you would like to print.

Please wear closed in shoes, and bring an apron or old shirt (something you're willing to get pulp and ink on).

Join renowned West Australian printmaker Helen Clarke as she leads a day intensive reduction linocut printing workshop here in the Midland Junction printmaking studio. Helen will guide you through the complex process of creating an image by carving into linoleum and printing layers of coloured ink. Skills covered in the workshop include transferring an image to lino, an introduction to carving tools, carving techniques, registering and editioning prints. All materials such as lino blocks, acid free paper, cutting tools, inks and rollers are included in the workshop fee.

Over 2 weeks Monika Lukowska will teach the basics of screen printing. Create a hand-cut stencil and work with layers of colour and transparency to print your design onto paper. Learn about registration and how to produce a small edition of prints. Explore layering simple patterns and the effects you can achieve with varying the opacity of colours.
