You can wander through the vibrant venue and experience why this site has such as special place in the history and culture of the Swan region.

MJAC is excited to present a one-day workshop where you are guided through the basics of classical human head drawing by experienced drawer, Nidas Arkusauskas. He will demonstrate a typical portrait rendering to establish a clearer understanding of the anatomy.

Nidas will dedicate time with each participant and share his insight and expertise, giving you the confidence to practice these skills further. This workshop is designed for both adults and teenagers with no prior drawing experience.

Includes a short lunch break. Tea/coffee and biscuits provided.

Expressive Drawing in the Built Environment with Ben Joel

Join Ben Joel for guided drawing adventures around the Old Midland Railway Workshops. These iconic buildings and their surrounds present a wonderful opportunity to explore inventive drawing of built form, and in the process to learn new skills and refine existing ones. Working both en-plein air and from photos taken on site, Ben will help develop your confidence in expressive options for drawing convincing freehand structures and spaces over three weeks. We will meet for these sessions at the Midland Junction Arts Centre before moving to the Railway Workshops site.

Bring your own favourite drawing gear. Paper, drawing boards and clips provided. Closed-in shoes, sunscreen and a hat are advised.

Discover Drypoint with Marina Van Leeuwen

Discover how you can use Drypoint printmaking to create beautiful, detailed prints using everyday materials with Marina Van Leeuwen. Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking method likened to using a pen without the ink in which you draw with a dry point onto a flat surface or plate which is then inked and printed.

In this two week evening course, you will learn to use non-toxic drypoint methods with plates from both commercial polyethylene plastic and household materials (milk cartons, juice containers and cardboard). Processes covered in this course can be easily replicated at home. Suitable for beginner’s and artists looking to extend their knowledge.   

Marina van Leeuwen is an multi-disciplinary artist based in Perth. She employs print, paint, photography, collage and found objects to explore overlooked textures and patterns in urban spaces. See more of her work here.

Expressive Sketching with Ryan Ahern

Explore methods of expressive sketching in this two week workshop with Ryan Ahern. You’ll learn to draw the human form with simple, gestural marks in charcoal, working from a life model and dramatic sets of light. Ryan will explain his approach to artistic elements of line, form and proportion, coaching you to develop a loose and painterly style and a sense of expression that is not stifled. Suitable for beginners and artists looking to refresh their knowledge. This course is Part 1 and Ryan’s latest figurative series, with Part 2: Expressive Painting progressing to the use of oil paint.

 Ryan is a West Australian figurative painter, life drawing instructor and former Artist-in-Residence at the Midland Junction Arts Centre. His work is styled on 20th century impressionism and subdued realism and can be found in a variety of private collections and in public exhibitions.
