Kurinuki with Deanne Jecks

Learn the traditional Japanese hand building technique of Kurinuki with Shaping Space | Holding Space artist Deanne Jecks in this two-part workshop. Kurinuki is a unique subtractive method that involves carving, hollowing and shaping from a solid block of clay, resulting in beautiful organic vessels. In part one you’ll create a couple of small vessels ready to be glazed in part two.

Deanne Jecks is a ceramic artist practising since 2017 after an inspiring visit to Japan. Deanne also studies Ikebana (the Japanese art of flower arrangement) and Kintsugi (the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics). She creates sculptural pieces using a variety of techniques, manipulating forms to create interest, while leaving space for a considered floral arrangement.

Lee Woodcock is known for his wood fire ceramics which he fires in his own studio kiln twice a year. Lee also teaches ceramics at North Metro TAFE and other art centres in and around Perth.

You'll learn how to add texture and colour to your raw clay forms with a range of clays and decoration techniques. An Interior Designer as well as Ceramicist, Tracey will also share her knowledge of design to guide you in the creation of your own stylish ceramic wall art. 

Tracey Pinker uses hand building techniques to create earthy, textured pieces.  Finished works celebrate clay by retaining a tactile link to the materials’ origins. You can view her functional pieces here.

Materials supplied but you are welcome to bring your own personal items in part-two to incorporate in your wall hanging.

Celebrated ceramicist Bernard Kerr will guide you through developing interesting asymmetrical aesthetic forms of sound construction and beautiful decoration. 

You'll adorn your vessel using layered coloured slips and resist techniques to create visually stimulating textures. The last class on glazing is held 2 weeks after the others to allow for works to be bisque fired.

Construct a ceramic portrait bust in this four-part workshop with celebrated ceramicist Bernard Kerr. Working from a live model and photos you'll construct a human head in three dimensions whilst gaining an understanding of the underlying anatomy.

You'll also learn about the use of appropriate clay bodies, how to construct a support, allow for shrinkage and ways to model and carve clay. The last class on glazing is held after the others to allow for works to be bisque fired.

Working with thin brass and copper sheets you will learn to cut, fold and finish the metal creating delicate forms to form a pair of earrings or a brooch. Participants will utilise assemblage techniques using cold connections to create earring hooks or a brooch pin with the option to oxidise their copper sheet to create a beautiful matte black surface finish their work.

Cut, hand stitch and embellish a magic mask these school holidays with upcoming exhibiting artist Chloe Nolan. Spend the morning sifting through fabric, crystals, glitter, beads and lace to create a fun new character to take home and play with. For those unable to stitch, we will have a number of masks will be pre-made and ready to decorate.
